Virtual Fiber Networking and Impact of Optical Path Grooming on Creating Efficient Layer One Services
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper presents a novel “virtual fiber” network service that exploits wavebands. This service provides virtual direct tunnels that directly convey wavelength paths to connect customer facilities. To improve the resource utilization efficiency of the service, a network design algorithm is developed that can allow intermediate path grooming at limited nodes and can determine the best node location. Numerical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed service architecture. key words: waveband, optical path grooming, virtual fiber networking, virtual private network, layer one service

School of Computer Science Literature Review and Survey (0360-510, Fall 2006) Heuristics for Traffic Grooming in WDM Optical Networks with Shared Path Protection
The emergence of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology has significantly increased the transmission capacity of a link in today's optical networks. In WDM networks, the bandwidth request of a traffic stream is usually much lower than the capacity of a wavelength. Traffic grooming can aggregate low-rate connections onto high-capacity optical fibers to make an efficient use of the ban...
متن کاملDynamic traffic grooming in WDM mesh networks using a novel graph model
As our fiber-optic backbone networks migrate from interconnected SONET rings to arbitrary mesh topology, traffic grooming on WDM mesh networks becomes an extremely important research problem. (Traffic grooming refers to the problem of efficiently packing a set of low-speed connection requests onto high-capacity channels.) To address this problem, we employ a new, generic graph model for dynamic...
متن کاملDynamic Traffic Grooming using Fixed-Alternate Routing in WDM Mesh Optical Networks
There is a mismatch between lightpath channel capacity and traffic request capacity in wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) optical mesh networks. Traffic grooming is needed to resolve this mismatch in an efficient way. We study the dynamic traffic grooming problem in WDM mesh networks using the fixed-alternate routing (FAR) approach. Based on the FAR approach, we propose the fixed-order groom...

A mesh optical network consists of several cross-connecting nodes (Figure 6.1). Some nodes are O-E-O and some all optical. Large nodes are capable of carrying aggregate traffic at extremely high capacities, and also to add–drop and groom traffic. Each interconnecting link consists of many dual fibers (one fiber per direction), and they include signal conditioners (equalization and regeneration)...
متن کاملOptical WDM Networks: Traffic Grooming in Mesh Networks and Metro Networks using ROADMs
Optical Fiber technology employing wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) has and continues to be investigated and commercially deployed to meet our ever-increasing bandwidth demands. WDM partitions the huge bandwidth of an optical fiber into many non-overlapping wavelength channels, each of which can operate at the data rate of 10 Gbps (or 40 Gbps or higher). This dissertation investigates des...
